The tsunami wasn't quite as big as feared. On the Chilean coast it was up to 9 ft. but the worst seen around the globe was 6 ft. Moderate coastal flooding, minor damage, no deaths beyond Chilean territory (4 deaths, 11 missing on a nearby Chilean archipelago that had little warning).
This shows the difference between the haves and the have-nots of the world. This earthquake was far, far stronger than the Haiti earthquake (actually closer to 500 times more powerful...moment magnitude is logarithmic), yet they could afford the building codes to keep people safe. 300 dead right now, probably won't hit 1,000 despite somewhat catastrophic damage.

Last I saw the death toll was 700 and change.. I think it might hit a thousand.

It is sad. But, I guess it is because Haiti's quake occurred closer to the surface than Chile's, and thusly was more violent...
